Interactive Ecotourism Map for Sierra Gorda, Queretaro, Mexico |
|
Sierra Gorda is a place of great natural beauty, being one of the most biodiverse areas of Mexico. In an area of under 400,000 hectares (one third of Queretaro state) the reserve
has a myriad of different ecosystems from arid semi-desert in the south, through a range of ecosystems to pine and the now very rare cloud forest on its highest peaks, which reach to more than 3000m above sea level.
This extraordinary diversity is due to it being situated where the two major mountain ranges of Mexico, the Western and Eastern Sierra Madres meet, and it straddling a transition zone between the
nearctic and neotropical biogeographic zones. Among its most impressive wildlife species are the Jaguar, Cougar, Military Macaw as well as the occasional Black bear,
not to forget some endemic bird species such as the locally named Chivizcoyo or Bearded Wood Partridge.
The Sierra Gorda Alliance is a group of NGOs working in Sierra Gorda for over 20 years towards the conservation and sustainable development of the region, for the benefit of its people and biodiversity. Read more about the important work the alliance does here. This map shows places to visit in and around the Sierra Gorda Biosphere reserve. Many of the markers represent small, community run low-impact tourism projects which aim to give people alternative livelihoods while having a small impact on the local environment, such as the campsite at Rio Escanela. Others are interesting places to visit, with both cultural places of interest such as the Archaeological sites at Ranas and Toluquilla and well conserved places of natural beauty such as the river and waterfall at El Chuveje.
